I think IELTS has a very important role in laying the foundation for the English proficiency required in every domain today. For example, listening tests if you can understand basic English responses, such as making phone calls to a university's international office or travel agency. In this sense, I think that the IELTS test preparation and examinations have made my study abroad experience and overall proficiency in communication even better. Also, since many students across the globe are taking the IELTS test, IELTS was a common topic that helped me make a lot of friends. It had more impact on my daily life than I ever expected.

I took the IELTS test for the first time in May 2021. Prior to it, I studied independently while going through final exams at university and working part-time. I always felt like I was not allocating enough time to study and prepare for the exam. Later, I realized that the hours you crammed do not have as much impact as people think. The way you study, how long you can stay focused, and how well you can use your knowledge will decide whether you will score high or not.

I prepared for the writing section the most. I would write an essay on a certain topic, making sure I used topic vocabulary and correct grammatical constructions. One of the most important rules to remember is that people prefer to read clear, concise, and coherent essays. That means that each paragraph must convey one idea, usually placed in the beginning, followed by supporting ideas. The preparation taught me how to communicate clearly.

Reading was quite easy as I read a lot: newspapers, scientific articles, and books. While preparing for IELTS, I spiced up reading books with several easy hacks: I would keep a notepad where I would jot down the gist of each chapter, and copy useful expressions and words. It helped a lot during the exam as I managed to stay focused for longer.

Contrary to a lot of my peers, speaking was the easiest section. I was not anxious or stressed, in contrast, I enjoyed the chat with the examiner and didn’t notice how time was over. I think it was because I interact a lot with native speakers due to my job. Practice helps to overcome the fear of making a mistake and improves fluency. I think students can benefit from learning apps like Italkie, speaking clubs or just an hour of talking on a specific topic and analyzing the speech.

Just when I received my certificate, I found out about IELTS Prize program by British Council. The program would provide £3000 for study expenses. At that time, I already decided I wanted to pursue my master's degree in Japan so the chance to get a scholarship to cover my expenses seemed a fantastic opportunity. The application process was very straightforward, so I didn’t face much difficulty with it. In addition to a standard set of documents including a copy of my IELTS test report, the photo, and a copy of my passport, I wrote a short essay outlining my plans and what value I can bring to people around me. The staff of the British Council supported me in every stage of the application.

IELTS is not just a test of your command of language. It opens doors to multiple opportunities, and great connections and serves as a foundation for future accomplishments. With challenges comes change so think about IELTS as the first step towards achieving your dreams.
